week6

The United States Olympic Trials are done, and we have 6 athletes that have kind of punched their tickets to Paris 2024. 3 female athletes; Fiona O'Keeffe, Emily Sisson and Dakotah Lindwurm have all officially punched their tickets. O'Keeffe made history multiple times over and got a ticket to Paris as a result: the 25-year-old became the first American woman ever to win the Olympic trials in a marathon debut and did so in 2:22:10, the fastest time in women's marathon trials history.

On the men’s side; Conner Mantz and Clayton Young have both officially punched their tickets. Mantz and Young are training partners since college, and have run many a mile in lockstep with hopes of making an Olympic team together. Well done, boys!! In an interesting and semi-dramatic twist, the third place finisher, Leonard Korir, has his ticket - but it’s not yet punched. The American men have only “unlocked” two spots in the marathon, as only 2 individuals have run under 2:08:10. So - in order for Korir to toe the starting line in Paris this summer, at least 1 American Man (doesn’t have to be Korir), must run under 2:08:10. Dramatic AF.

For more than 15 miles, a small-town D2 kid from Fort Wayne, Indiana led the Olympic Trials, in his first ever Marathon Olympic Trials. Zach Panning’s grit, determination and candor is something we honestly haven’t seen since Pre’s days. Yes, we did compare him to THE Steven Prefontaine. He 100% full sent the marathon this past Saturday, made it an honest race, and walked off that course having given it every ounce of fight he had. We’re fking impressed; and at 28 years old, he’s just getting started in his elite running career.

In this week’s email:

  • Earbud Review: Workout without listening to music? We could never. Here’s some fan favs: Click Here!

  • Mom Power, Unlocked: Mom Guilt, who?? This fierce mama-to-be took to the streets of Orlando and absolutely crushed.

  • Brooks Running V-Day Collection: Don’t buy your Valentine some cheap grocery store chocolates for V-Day; splurge on some Valentine’s Day themed running apparel. More brownie points.

  • Dopers Duped: A Kenyan is banned for sending a doppelgänger to take a drug test; suspicious AF.

👇Watch a Cadence-recommended Vid: Yes, it’s a short video. However, we’re impressed by how Brooks really showed up and showed out in Orlando this past weekend. Hats off to their marketing team for creating a first-class event.

Post of the Week: Running Mag Editor gets caught by Marathon Investigation

Race Results of the Week

Tidbits

How to go #2 in nature, Ethically: You’ve not earned your wings as a runner until you’ve had a pit stop “in the wild” during a run. When nature calls, you can’t say no; leaving you scrambling for the nearest public (or public-adjacent) bathroom you can find - or - even worse - the most secluded bush you can find. Yikes.

Molly Seidel Scratched: The Olympic Bronze Medalist scratches from the Olympic Trials less than 36 hours before she was meant to toe the line. With her injury, she’s likely out for ALL 2024 Olympic Trials. Feel Better, Molly.

PTO vs. IM: Lucy Charles Barclay is caught in the middle of the push/pull dynamic that has become the Professional Triathlete Organisation versus IRONMAN. LCB’s schedule is stacked with attending the T100 Tour, and apparently - her sideline/comment warriors have something to say about it.

Tri Vegas: And on the note of PTO; they’ve announced yet another step, Lake Las Vegas in October. There’s been tris that have come and gone in Vegas; it’s a unique landscape, for sure, but can PTO pull off an event there?

Imagination is Key: If you’ve never helped to produce an event, you likely don’t understand or appreciate the 1000 steps it takes to execute on just 1% of the event. When the first Oceanside Tri took place, it wasn’t owned by IRONMAN, but instead; a local RD. He valued the civic engagement of producing a local event, and had the imagination to rally the community, local government and local business owners to be his biggest supporters. When you’re trying to get shit done; remember, imagination is KEY.

🏃All Sports News.

Non-endurance, and endurance-adjacent sports news. Yah, you might not see these stories on ESPN, but they’re still cool.

  • Sports Betting creating a gambling problem: DraftKings and FanDuel have made it exceptionally easy for people who otherwise wouldn’t have easy access to gambling, create bad habits. With a download of an app, and a swipe of a finger; you’ve just gambled your whole paycheck on thinking the Lions were going to the Super Bowl. Oops.

  • $288.7 Million - Guaranteed: Short stops rarely see the big pay days when it comes to sports contracts. 22-year old Bobby Witt Jr. has just signed the deal of a lifetime. $288.7 million guaranteed - injury, sickness, or otherwise, is coming his way over the next 11 years.

  • T. Swift for Super Bowl Half Time?  Even the Japan Embassy has confirmed that Taylor Swift can make it from her show in Japan, back to Vegas for the Super Bowl, with time to spare, to watch her BF - Travis Kelce crush against the 49ers.

Performance Of The Week(end): Zach MFing Panning in the Olympic Trials

If you think every professional runner was literally born to be fast, and slim builds were ‘genetics’, you’re so wrong. Zach Panning is the underdog we’re always going to be rooting for.

If you need some inspiration to get your ass off the couch and start being an active participant in your destiny, just look at what Zach used to look like in middle school. In his words; never say you can’t.
