Week 45

Alexi Pappas; Filmmaker, Track & Field Olympian, Ultra Trail Runner, takes on NYC Marathon in style - in the age grouper division.

If you’ve not had the opportunity (yet) to head to Staten Island at the crack of 4 AM to run the New York City Marathon, just know, it’s basically all the negatives of attending an outdoor music festival, with none of the perks AND you’re standing in the cold (probably still just as underdressed as you were at Burning Man).

Before you start your 26.2 mile trek through the 5 Boroughs and experience (in our humble opinion) the absolute best party/spectator atmosphere you’ve ever witnessed, you’ll spend upwards of four hours milling around the Runner’s Village on Staten Island. Here, like an international airport, anything goes. Costumes, people wearing trash bags (not homeless), runners sleeping on the ground, and the marathoner right of passage: long-ass porta-john lines.

For the runners that aren’t elite, aren’t going for a PR, and are truly enjoying the journey, the start line of the NYC Marathon is a spectacle to soak in and one we hope every runner that wants to, has the opportunity to experience.

In this week’s email:

  • Royal Fam: A new bloodline of triathlon is born - Prince George.

  • This is Your Sign: There’s the spectators that cheer you on during a race, and then there’s the spectators that make it a sport of its own.

  • Trot Squad: Are you (turkey) trotting this Thanksgiving?

Tidbits

The History of the Turkey Trot: The Turkey Trot is the most popular running event of the year. In 1896, in cold-ass Buffalo, New York, 6 brave (stupid?) runners took to the streets in front of their local YMCA to Turkey Trot. Only 2 finished that year, but from that, an American Tradition was unknowingly born. Today, nearly a million people compete in a Turkey Trot; is your family one that stumbles out of bed (after the biggest bar night of the year) to jog/walk your way to a hard-fought 5k finish line, or do you sleep in and drink mimosas and put the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on TV?

$13,000 Bike: No, it’s not electric. We don’t know WHY it’s $13k, but if you’re looking for a leg up on the competition, and want to ride probably the world’s most overengineered bicycle, this is the one for you. Did we sell you on it?

Get Decked out for the Biggest Running Event of the Year: No, we’re not talking about your “A Goal” Marathon. We’re talking about your local Turkey Trot. Where the city’s BEST weekend warriors, fast high school cross country runners, washed up college kids and the dude who always wears compression shorts to a charity 5K all come together to trot their hearts out.

Cotton Kills: If you’re working out in the 100% cotton shirt you bought from your college bookstore 10 years ago, it’s time to upgrade. The saying - cotton kills - is so true with endurance sports. Layering is key, and wearing fabric that wicks sweat away from your body will keep you comfortable in any condition. Our fav winter fabric is merino wool; we know, boujee.

Literal Triathlon Royalty: No, we aren’t talking about Lionel Sanders. Prince George, part of the literal British Royal Family, is 10 years young and has taken to trying triathlon. We’d tell his dad steer clear of the sport, because it’s expensive as hell, but we think they can bankroll it.

🏃Bucket List Recs

Big training week behind ya and want to add something to your bucket list? Need something to kick your butt into high gear? Check out our endurance bucket list recs below and sign up for something you’ll probably regret when you’re doing a 20 mile training run in August in the Midwest.

  • Virtual TCS New York City Marathon: Have you tried your luck at the lottery for NYC Marathon, and lost out every time, or tried a charity slot and can’t raise the minimums? The Virtual NYC Marathon was birthed during COVID (as an obvious means to bring in some much needed rev for NYRR, but with some perks for athletes), and has continued to grow in popularity. Run a DIY 26.2, in a single Strava activity, to gain entry into the following year’s NYC Marathon. Walk, crawl or jog your way to peace of mind that you’ll be running the boroughs the following year.

  • Florida Mixed Surface 2-Person Cycling Time Trial: Who said that cycling isn’t a team sport, or that Disney is the only cool shit in FL? Ride some of the loneliest roads in the state with your best bud - time trial style.

  • Australian RADL GRVL: Go ride amongst the kangaroos, wombats and other quintessential Australian wild life. This race makes it’s inaugural debut in 2024; be part of history and ride an event hosted by the same company that puts on SBT GRVL.

  • Stairway to Heaven (Haiku Stairs): We’re biased, but really anything in Hawaii could probably be called Heaven. We legally can’t suggest it, but we really think hiking the infamous Haiku Stairs before they’re officially torn down should be on everyone’s bucket list.

Performance Of The Week(end): Catherine Debrunner, NEW Course Record Holder in NYC Marathon Wheelchair Division
