Week 14: The Secret to Living to 100

My Great Grandma lived to be 103 years old. She was a tough old Italian lady that weathered many storms, many seasons of life, and didn’t believe in restrictions; she drank a glass of wine every day and never turned down pasta or bread.

The Blue Zone is an area where people live to 100+ years old at a higher rate than any other region in the world. Did you know the average live expectancy in the United States is 76.33? If you could get another couple of GOOD decades out of life; how would that change you? What would you do with that extra time?

This documentary follows the amazing culture, people and cuisines that create the perfect equation for an extremely long (and fruitful!) life. Watch on Netflix, HERE!

👇Listen to a Cadence-recommended Pod: You know the age-old saying; it’s about the journey, not the finish line? There’s not really a saying for the ‘Space Between’ starting & finishing something; but' it’s just as important of a time to reflect on and honor.

WTF Post of the Week:

Aerobars, bar ends; they’re all getting out of hand to reduce drag (in every activity, apparently)

Race Results of the Week

Tidbits

US Cycling Team < NASA: Former US Track Cycling Champion & Olympian Christina Birch is fulfilling yet another adrenaline-filled dream/bucket list item & (almost) literally going to the moon. Birch, after a 2-year training process, is now part of NASA.

Walk 1200 miles with strangers: This 8-part docuseries follows a team of complete strangers as they walk together to complete the 1,200 Pacific Northwest Trail; this docuseries, like the journey, is self-supported. No guides, film crews or support teams. Could you do it?

YES, CHEF: If you’re like us and binge-watched ‘The Bear’ and now want to start a restaurant…this cookbook is for you. Matty Matheson, co-star in the show, is releasing a cookbook in October that focuses on the 3 most important food groups for endurance athletes; salads, soups and sandwiches (that’s also what the cookbook is titled).

Endurance Tech Fail: Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs) are not new technology; they’ve been used by diabetic individuals to keep their glucose levels in check. CGMs are kind of the new kid on the block in endurance sports and Supersapiens was leading the charge. In March; the tech start-up just announced they’re closing their doors; making one less non-prescription CGM option for interested endurance athletes.

🏃Bucket List Recs

Big training week behind ya and want to add something to your bucket list? Need something to kick your butt into high gear? Check out our endurance bucket list recs below and sign up for something you’ll probably regret when you’re doing a 20 mile training run in August in the Midwest.

  • Caliente Bare Dare 5K: This is North America’s largest clothing-optional 5K. If you’ve ever wondered what it feels like to run a 5K completely naked, except for a pair of running shoes and your Garmin; here’s your best chance at trying it out without getting arrested.

  • The End of the World: Hawaii is known for their watersports; SCUBA, snorkel, fishing, free diving, etc. The land is equally as enchanting, and on the Big Island - you can visit ‘The End of the World.’

  • Lost City Trek: Do the BEST hike in South America; the Lost City Trek. Live out The Jungle Book in real life; trek through jungles, rain forests, across rivers and past ancient ruins.

  • Dungeness Spit: This 11-mile shoreline hike is absolutely stunning; it’s relatively flat, with just 130 feet elevation gain, and is mostly a serene sandy beach hike. Super magical.

Performance Of The Week(end): Pros in the Indoor Cup
