week11

What drives you to ride (or run or swim or paddle)? This cinematic documentary follows several pro MTB riders and attempts to answer the question: what drives them to ride?

At the core of endurance sports; there’s always a driving factor, a little light, in each of us that propels us forward, makes us dig deeper, and climb out of the depths of a hard training day, long race day or shitty work day. What drives you forward? What makes you WANT to get up every day and commit yourself to achieving excellence both in, and out of sport? On your worst days, when you might want to throw in the towel and grab a pizza & beer instead of lace up your running shoes; remind yourself that champions aren’t built on the playing field, they’re built in the early mornings, late nights, long training sessions that nobody sees. Keep going - and ALWAYS keep chasing your ‘WHY'.

In this week’s email:

  • Air Purifier: This Air Purifier is typically $160 - on sale now for $90, with an extra $20 OFF coupon. Put it in your bedroom & know that you’re giving yourself the best chance at solid sleep.

  • Weeknight Carboloading: Weeknight meals don’t have to be leftovers or whatever sad salad bag you have in the fridge. Spice it up with a little homemade spaghetti and meatballs moment.

  • Fancy Soap: This soap is above the rest. Next time you run out of your bar of Irish Spring - give this body wash a try. You won’t be disappointed.

  • Abu Dhabi Cancelled: The pro contingent in triathlon was split this week between Abu Dhabi and CLASH/T100 Miami; then Abu Dhabi was cancelled due to extreme rainfall/flooding - some athletes picked wrong.

👇Listen to a Cadence-recommended Pod: If you haven’t heard of the pod ‘National Park After Dark’ - give it a listen. It’s a podcast that features true, harrowing stories in national parks. Maybe don’t listen to it right before your next solo hike.

Tidbits

Ultra…Fishing? Ultrarunning is typically done in the backcountry; trails, river crossings and mountain passes are all part of the game. At it’s core, ultrarunning is extremely primal. So is fishing. Enter: Ultrafishing. If you’re big on fishing, and big on running, combine both endurance activities and chase unpressured freshwater fish in the backcountry.

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants: America Ferrera, most recently in the Barbie movie (but most famously co-starring in Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants) is not only an actress, but also was a cover girl for

Experience Space in our Atmosphere: The Airbus A300 ‘Zero-G’ is a plane that performs a wild feat; bringing the feeling of weightlessness to those on board, through following a parabolic flight path. It’s all gravity, baby.

YOU ARE AN IRONMAN (IYKYK): The Voice of IRONMAN, Mike Reilly, retired at the end of the 2022 season. Now, he’ll be returning (for one night only) to call another couple thousand athletes across the finish line at the 25th anniversary of IRONMAN Lake Placid.

🏃Bucket List Recs

  • Rule of Three Gravel: Tarmac. Gravel. Singletrack. Jack of All Trades, Master of None. This cycling race combines 3 types of surfaces in Bentonville, Arkansas that makes for an incredibly unique (and difficult) cycling event. We also just never need an excuse to go to MTB Mecca; Bentonville.

  • Raikura Track, New Zealand: A 32 KM hike will lead you through parts of NZ that look (and literally are) straight out of a movie. It’s an easy-ish crushed gravel path that nearly anyone can tackle - however, you may want to plan on an overnight trek, so you can enjoy the splendor that has remained unchanged for thousands of years.

  • Dry Tortugas National Park: 70 miles off the coast of Key West, there is a 19th Century for that you can reach via ferryboat or seaplane. This is perhaps the tiniest National Park by land, but also one of the most unique. You can camp within the fort, and you’re essentially 1/50 people that sleep overnight on the island.
