Week50

Jessie Diggins is an American Olympian, who won the first ever cross-country skiing medal for the USA in 2018. With her sparkle/glitter makeup, infectious smile and absolutely dominant XC skiing skills, she’s hard not to root for. It’s World Cup szn for the skiiers of the world, and Diggins is, in her true fashion, crushing it. This past Sunday, she notched her 2nd win (in 2 weeks) on the World Cup circuit. Later this season, watch out for Jessie Diggins on her home turf in Minnesota, part of a stop on the World Cup XC skiing tour.

In this week’s email:

  • Stay Caffeinated: Endurance athletes consume an ungodly (and frankly, probably unhealthy) amount of caffeine. Scratch the gas station coffee, and step up your brew game with a portable espresso maker.

  • Japanese Running Back On Top? The Japanese distance running contingent is STRONG headed into the Paris Games.

  • Extreme Swim: Visit Australia and compete one of the most extreme marathon swims we could find.

  • More Olympic Drama: So…do you agree that Russian athletes should be able to compete in the Olympics? YES or NO

👇🎅Listen to a Cadence-recommended Playlist🎄: Remember when you would drive around listening to Christmas music at night, checking out the Christmas lights and displays around town? We’ve taken that one step further; put on your brightest high-viz, headlamp and warmest tights and go for a night jog around the ‘hood to see all the twinkling lights. Trust us, way better than driving around, and we even gave you a themed playlist to run to.

Tidbits

Study Hall: When you’re all in on something; and you feel like maybe you’ve reached a plateau in your training or you’re sidelined with an injury, that can be frustrating as hell. Even when you’re not on your bike trainer, or running outside in the frigid cold, you can still be improving your game (or your run, or your ride) through becoming a student of the sport. It won’t kill you to read a book; but it WILL definitely inspire you to keep kicking ass.

Russians Are Back It: The IOC has formally agreed to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete in the Paris Olympic Games as ‘neutral’ athletes. So far, only 11 athletes have qualified to participate from these countries. What does a neutral athlete mean, you ask? Well, they compete against all athletes, just as normal, but without the flag colors, anthem or support from official Russian government. The Russians feel this was discriminatory, but is it? They can’t stay out of hot water (politically or athletically).

Prime Investigated: IYKYK, Prime drinks are both addicting and delicious. Started by famous Youtuber Logan Paul, and now has invaded every grocery store, gas station and high school lunch room in North America. Apparently - and this we did not know - each caffeinated version of Prime has 6x more caffeine than a can of Coke. Now, the feds are investigating this ‘special’ drink that the company claims ‘is intended for only 18+.’

F*ck yeah, Ford: Not only is Ford the grittiest car company out there, now, we’ve also declared them the most bike-friendly vehicle manufacturer. With their new door exit technology, it will alert driver and passengers when there appears to be a pedestrian or cyclist outside of the door that is being opened. Let’s hope this cuts down on the amount of cyclists getting ‘doored’ by vehicles.

🏃Bucket List Recs

Big training week behind ya and want to add something to your bucket list? Need something to kick your butt into high gear? Check out our endurance bucket list recs below and sign up for something you’ll probably regret when you’re doing a 20 mile training run in August in the Midwest.

  • Running the Nakasendō: A 355-mile route from Kyoto to Tokyo, covering the same footpath that the ancient Japanese took as a thoroughfare between two villages. This is the REAL Japan - plus anything Des Linden does, is a vote of confidence.

  • GFNY Cozumel: This event calls itself, the ‘World’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride’ and while we haven’t done it (yet), anything with ocean views, warm weather and guac is a win.

  • Port to Pub: Swim race Down Unda’? ✅ Kangaroos? ✅ Shark sightings? Great Barrier Reef? ✅ You didn’t ask for the most extreme marathon swim in the world, but we gave it to you anyways.

Performance Of The Week(end): OK Wildlife Dept ~ the most unhinged DNR Twitter account.
